3 Things Your Obstetrician Can Do To Prepare You For Intercourse At Your Six-Week Postpartum Check-Up

When you go into your obstetrician for your six-week postpartum check-up, their main goals are to see how you are healing and how you are emotionally handling having a newborn baby. During this visit, they will also discuss sexual intercourse with you, if you would like, and will explain how it will likely feel different and things that you can do to feel more comfortable physically during intercourse. This article will discuss 3 things that your obstetrician can do to prepare you for intercourse at your six-week postpartum check-up.

Remove Any Remaining Stitches

While most stitches used after you have a baby are meant to dissolve on their own, sometimes this doesn't happen. If this is the case for you, your obstetrician will be able to remove them for you using small scissors and tweezers. Often times you will still have bleeding and pain if your stitches haven't dissolved on their own, so having them removed will relieve a great deal of discomfort for you. It will also help to prepare you for sexual intercourse because you can completely finish healing down there.

Order You A Prescription For Estrogen Cream

After you have a baby, you may still be very dry in your vaginal area because your body hasn't yet started making the amount of cervical mucus that it normally does. Because of this, sex can often be very uncomfortable for you. To help get your body to create that cervical mucus again, your doctor may prescribe you some estrogen cream. You can place this cream on the lips of your vagina and a small amount up in your vaginal area. This helps to make this area less dry and will help your body to create more mucus, in turn making sex more comfortable.

Help You Choose A Form Of Birth Control

Your obstetrician will also discuss with you a variety of different birth control options that you have to choose from. Since you are going to start having intercourse again, you want to make sure that you don't get pregnant before you would like to. There are so many birth control options out there for you to use, such as birth control pills, shots, IUDs, patches, and condoms. Your obstetrician can discuss some of the pros and the cons of each one with you, and this will help you to choose the best form of birth control for you.
